The JCFC's Purpose
Health Care Needs in Marin and Sonoma Counties
Approximately 100,000 immigrants, single parents, students, elderly
and part-time or unemployed residents in Marin and Sonoma counties
are uninsured and cannot afford medical treatment. Most work steadily
but do not qualify for healthcare benefits and are forced to choose
between housing and healthcare. The need for accessible, affordable
healthcare far exceeds the services available resulting in unwarranted
and costly treatment through emergency rooms. Since health problems
are both a cause and an indicator of poverty, preventing or treating
these problems can reduce the number of people in need.
Volunteer Medical Clinic
The Jewish Community Free Clinic (JCFC) is a 501(c)(3), non-profit,
free, volunteer medical clinic that draws on traditional Jewish
concepts of tzedakah (justice/charity) and tikkun olam
(repairing the world) to offer free medical care for anyone in need,
without regard to ethnicity, race or religion. The Clinic's founders
are clinicians working throughout the County's healthcare system.
With nearly 100,000 uninsured in Marin and Sonoma counties, they
felt they must take action regarding access to health care for the
uninsured. The JCFC tapped volunteers' deeply rooted desire to carry
on traditions of caring for the sick (known as bikkur cholim
in Judaism) to found the Jewish Community Free Clinic.
Mission Statement
Drawing on Jewish traditions of tzedakah (charity) and tikkun
olam (repairing the world), we offer free medical care for anyone
in need, without regard to ethnicity, race or religion. We offer
an atmosphere of respect, empowerment and partnership with our patients,
and strive to assist them in attaining full health and well-being.
